ASA will hold its annual Fall Workshop on Saturday, November 14, 2026 at Summit School in Phoenix. The Student Workshop will include Master Classes and Group Lessons for Suzuki Students in Violin, Viola, Cello, and Voice.
Our Guest Teachers include Lucy Shaw (violin & viola), Shu-Yi Scott (cello), and Kari Weldon (voice). Enrichment will include American Music for Early Musicians, American Folk Dance Favorites with Joshua Block (Orff), and Orchestra with Amy Bennett.
The Student Workshop will close with a Celebration Concert at 2:00 PM.

STUDENT WORKSHOP & SCHEDULE:
Full-Day Students will have four classes: a master class (semi-private lesson), repertoire class (group class playing Suzuki repertoire–please see review lists below), and two hours of Enrichment (American Music for Early Musicians, American Folk Dance Favorites with Joshua Block (Orff), Orchestra with Amy Bennett).
The Student Workshop will end with a Celebration Concert at 2:00 PM.
- 8:30 AM – 9:00 AM Check-In
- 9:00 AM -12:00 NOON Classes (Snack at 10:50 AM)
- 12:00 NOON – 1:00 PM Lunch
- 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM Classes
- 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM Celebration Concert
LUNCH/SNACK:
Families will provide their own lunches. Please enjoy eating together in the school’s courtyard. There are no refrigerators available, so please pack your lunch in a cooler or with ice packs. ASA will provide a snack between the 2nd and 3rd classes at 10:50 – 11:00 AM outside in the courtyard.
WORKSHOP FEES AND DEADLINES:
Student Workshop Fees/Deadlines: All students must register in advance. There will be no same day registrations. The final deadline to register is October 31, 2026.
- Full-Day Student (9:00 AM – 3:00 PM): Early Bird Registration is $75 per student, deadline Oct. 24. Regular Registration is $85 per student, deadline Oct. 31.
- Morning-Only Pre-Twinkle Student (9:00 AM – 12:00 NOON): Early Bird Registration is $45 per student, deadline Oct. 24. Regular Registration is $55 per student, deadline Oct. 31.
Please note that all registrations include a 1-year ASA family membership for 2026/27. You must be registered to attend–no same day registration. Please fill out one form per child attending.
Siblings: Family membership is included in the registration fee. If you are registering siblings, you only need to pay the family membership for the first student. So please subtract $10 per additional sibling.
REGISTRATION:
Registration is a two step process:
- Fill out the registration form. Families only need to complete one registration form for all children attending.
- Pay electronically by Zelle, or mail a check payable to ASA (mailing address is in the registration form).
To use Zelle, please open your bank’s app and scan the code below. Please note what the payment is for (ex. Student workshop, “student’s name”). Or you can also open your bank’s app and go to Zelle, type “The Arizona Suzuki Association” and use the email address arizonasuzuki@gmail.com. Enter the amount to be paid and what it is for (ex. Student workshop, “student’s name”). If paying for multiple students, you can make one payment, but please make note of each student name you are paying for.

2026 ASA FALL WORKSHOP Faculty
Lucy Shaw, violin
Lucy Shaw is an active performer, Suzuki teacher and clinician currently based in the Seattle, WA area. A native of Nova Scotia, Canada, she received her Bachelor degree at the S.C. Eckhardt-Gramatte Conservatory of Music at Brandon University in Manitoba, Canada, and her Master of Music in Violin Performance at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. Important musical influences include Sergiu Luca, Francis Chaplin, Sydney Harth and Jean-Jacques Kantorow. For eighteen years Lucy was owner/director of the Village Violin School in Houston where she was an active member of the Houston Area Suzuki Strings Association coordinating annual teacher development seminars, Suzuki graduations and workshops. She was violin coordinator for the Suzuki Association of the America’s 2008 National Conference and served on the SAA Board of Directors 2011-2014. As a guest teacher and clinician Lucy has taught at Workshops and Institutes in Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica and throughout the continental United States. Lucy currently maintains a private studio in Redmond, WA, and is an active member of the chapter affiliate, Suzuki Association of Washington State.
Dr. Shu-Yi Scott, cello
Dr. Shu-Yi Scott is a registered Suzuki cello teacher trainer, internationally respected clinician, and mentor who divides her time between Austin, Texas, and New York City. Known for a warm, clear, and effective teaching style, she directs the Scott Cello Studio and the Austin Cello Festival, and serves as President of the Austin Youth Orchestra. Holding a DMA from the University of Texas at Austin and an MM from Penn State University, Dr. Scott has mentored more than 400 cello teachers worldwide.Her signature approach blends child-centered pedagogy with structured sequencing, emphasizing multi-level group classes that unify players of all abilities. She extends this movement-based philosophy through her Learning in Motion resources, which incorporate tactile strategies like toys and games to help students internalize technique. Additionally, she co-created the video series “Shu-Yi & Merlin: Let’s Talk About Music Teaching” with Dr. Merlin Thompson to explore creative, sustainable pedagogy. Committed to empowering educators globally, Dr. Scott brings insight, energy, and grounded support to her training sessions, workshops, and studio coaching.
Joshua Block, music and movement
Joshua Block is in his 28th year of teaching music and movement at public and private schools. He currently teaches Pre-K through eighth-grade music at All Saints’ Episcopal Day School in Phoenix, AZ. Joshua is a Past President of AZ Orff and teaches movement classes for Orff-Schulwerk certification courses in Arizona, New Mexico, and San Diego. He has completed his Kodály certification and is a Past President of the Arizona Kodály Teachers Society. He is a past member of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association Board of Trustees and has presented sessions at the AOSA National Conference. Joshua has presented workshops for the Chinese Orff-Schulwerk Association in Beijing, Chengdu, Nanjing, and Xi’an, as well as at numerous Orff chapters across the United States. Joshua has published articles in Reverberations and the Orff Echo. He previously directed the Phoenix Boys Choir’s Cadet Choir and has taught music, dance, and creativity classes at Arizona State University. Joshua is also the worship leader at Valley View Bible Church in Paradise Valley.
Amy Bennett, orchestra director
Amy Bennett is in her twenty ninth year of teaching with Gilbert Public Schools. She has been the Director of Orchestras at Highland Junior High since the school’s opening in 1998 as well as the Assistant Orchestra Director at Highland High School. She earned her Bachelor of Music Education and Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance from Northern Arizona University in May of 1998. In 2004, she earned her Master of Music Education degree from Arizona State University. For the past twenty two years, Mrs. Bennett has been one of the conductors of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony. She has been a faculty member of the Scottsdale Community College and Northern Arizona University Curry Summer Music Camps and has served as a guest conductor for various honor orchestras throughout the state of Arizona. Mrs. Bennett has been involved in the Arizona Band and Orchestra Director’s Association, serving seven years as the chairman of the ABODA Fall Orchestra Festival, as well as Regional Orchestra Co-Chairman. She is a member of the National Association for Music Education and the American String Teachers Association. In 2009, Mrs. Bennett received the O.M. Hartsell Excellence in Music Teaching Award and in 2015 she received the Arizona ASTA Outstanding Public School Teacher of the Year Award.
